Comparison Guide
Prosper vs Xero
A focused comparison of core bookkeeping, migration effort, and workflow style for very small teams.
Scope comparison
Both tools support core bookkeeping: importing transactions, categorizing activity, reconciling accounts, invoicing, and exporting standard financial statements. Prosper is designed for continuous close with explainable automation and an exceptions-only workflow. Xero is a general accounting platform with broader configuration options and a large add-on ecosystem.
| Feature | Prosper | Xero |
|---|---|---|
| Core bookkeeping (transactions, categorization, reconciliation) | Designed for continuous close | Core accounting workflows |
| Bank feeds and CSV import | Plaid integration (Pro+), CSV import | Bank feeds and import tools (varies by region) |
| Automation style | Explainable AI autopilot + exceptions inbox | Rules and add-ons are common; confirm your setup |
| Invoicing | Unlimited (Pro+), recurring (Agency) | Invoicing included (features vary by plan) |
| Reports (P&L, Balance Sheet, Trial Balance) | Standard reports + accountant pack export | Standard financial reports |
| Multi-user access | Up to 10 seats (Agency tier) | Multi-user plans available |
| Migration into Prosper | Clean cut-off import + opening balance lock | Exports available; import depth varies |
Migration from Xero
Prosper uses a clean cut-off migration approach. Export your transactions from Xero up to a chosen cut-off date, import them into Prosper, confirm the schema if prompted, map accounts, and lock the opening balance.
This creates a trusted ledger boundary: historical data stays in Xero for reference, and new activity flows through Prosper. See our Xero migration guide.
Bank connections and caps
Prosper supports bank sync via Plaid on paid tiers and manual CSV import on Starter. Connected bank limits are tied to your Prosper plan (Pro: 5, Agency: 15).
If you need more connections, you can upgrade tiers as you grow. Learn about bank feeds.
Invoicing differences
Prosper includes invoicing as part of the bookkeeping workflow (unlimited invoices on Pro+, recurring and bulk invoicing on Agency). If invoicing is the center of your operating system, you may prefer a product that is more invoice-first.
Prosper is best when your goal is clean books and fast close, with invoices as a supporting workflow.
Pricing snapshot
Prosper starts at $0 (Starter) for manual import, then $49/mo (Pro) for bank sync and AI autopilot, or $199/mo (Agency) for multi-client management. Xero is subscription-priced with plans that vary by region and included features.
